Biography

Samuel Dejong, born in 1971 in De Bilt as Johannes Samuel de Jong, The Netherlands, is a self-taught artist who lives and works in Amsterdam. His remarkable journey bridges the disciplines of science, medicine, and art, culminating in a creative practice that reflects his lifelong fascination with nature, cosmology, and spirituality. 

Before fully dedicating himself to art, Samuel Dejong pursued an career in medicine and science. He studied medicine and surgery in Amsterdam and earning a PhD in Pathology. As a scientist and physician, he specialized in surgical oncology, pathology, and fluorescent optical imaging. This scientific background profoundly influences his artistic work, allowing him to develop new techniques and materials to express his vision.

Samuel Dejong’s art is inspired by the natural world and the workings of the universe. His works explore fundamental questions about time, space, and the dimensions of space-time, examining how these forces shape human existence. Themes of transformation, growth, and spirituality are central to his creative practice.

From an early age, Dejong explored artistic techniques such as tempera, oil painting and woodworking, establishing a solid foundation for his future endeavors. In 2015, he began focusing on series-based artworks. His first series, Anatomia, celebrated the beauty of natural forms, particularly insects, blending scientific precision with artistic expression. This was followed by a series featuring butterflies, where Dejong explored their symbolic significance as representations of metamorphosis and personal evolution.

In 2019, Samuel Dejong fully transitioned to a life dedicated to art, pushing his practice into more abstract realms. Series such as Space and Time, Singularity, and Interstellar reflect his fascination with cosmic and philosophical themes. His works aim to evoke harmony, tranquility, and equilibrium. As Dejong explains, “In a world full of chaos, there always is a place where everything is at peace and equilibrium.” 

More recently, Samuel has turned his focus to capturing and expressing emotions through texture and color. Recurrent themes such as solitude, melancholy, hope, and eternity have taken center stage in his work. His latest series, Samsara, marks a return to natural materials, depicting the cyclical nature of life and its perpetual transformations.

Samuel Dejong’s art is a profound blend of scientific precision and emotional depth, offering viewers a reflective space to explore the mysteries of both the universe and the human experience. Living and working in Amsterdam, he continues to push the boundaries of creativity, seeking to transcend the chaos of the modern world through his evocative and thought-provoking art.
